If you live somewhere where going to the beach is part of everyday life, you start to notice something: you can usually tell who knows their swimwear.
In beach towns and tropical destinations, an ill-fitting bikini can be a bit of a giveaway. Bottoms sagging after getting wet, a top that constantly needs adjusting, straps digging in, or extra fabric where there shouldn't be any—it might just be your first rodeo.
And that's okay. Finding a bikini that actually fits isn't always as intuitive as finding your size in everyday clothes.
A properly fitting swimsuit should feel secure, flattering, and—most importantly—like something you feel good in. Whether you're swimming, tanning, surfing, or spending the entire day by the water, you want to be wearing the bikini, rather than feeling like the bikini is wearing you.
Here are seven signs it might be time to rethink your fit.
1. Your Bikini Bottom Gets Baggy
This is one of the easiest signs to spot.
A bikini bottom should sit smoothly against your body without loose or sagging fabric. This becomes especially important once you get in the water—swim fabric gets heavier when wet, and a bottom that's already slightly loose when dry can become noticeably baggy after a swim.
If you're between sizes, consider how the fabric feels against your body rather than automatically sizing up.
A good bikini should hug you, not hang off you.
2. You're Constantly Pulling Your Bottoms Up
The opposite problem can happen too.
If your bottoms are sliding, shifting, or requiring an adjustment every few minutes, the size or the cut may not be right for your body.
Different rises and silhouettes naturally sit differently on the hips. Sometimes finding your perfect bikini isn't about changing sizes at all—it's about finding the cut that works best with your shape.
3. Your Bikini Top Gaps
A bikini top should sit against your body without unwanted gaps between the fabric and your skin.
If you're noticing extra space around the cups, sides, or neckline, your top may be too large—or that particular silhouette may simply not be the best match for you.
This is especially noticeable with structured and underwire bikini tops, where a close fit helps create both shape and support.
4. You Don't Feel Confident in It
This one might matter more than any sizing rule.
A bikini can technically "fit" perfectly and still not be the right bikini for you.
Some people love tiny bottoms, a little extra cleavage, and minimal coverage. Others feel their best with more support or coverage. Neither one is a better fit simply because it covers more or less.
The right bikini is the one you put on and immediately feel good in.
When you're comfortable with the way something sits on your body, it shows. You stop thinking about whether everything looks "right." You stop adjusting it for other people. You swim, walk around, lay in the sun, and enjoy yourself.
That's when you're truly wearing the swimsuit instead of letting the swimsuit wear you.
5. Your Straps Are Doing All the Work
Tightening your straps shouldn't be the only thing keeping your bikini top in place.
If your neck or shoulders start hurting after a few hours, you may need a more supportive style, a different size, or simply a different silhouette.
Your bikini should feel secure without needing to be tied within an inch of its life.
6. Your Bikini Looks Great Dry…Then Changes Completely in the Water
The real bikini fit test?
Get in the ocean.
A well-fitting swimsuit should stay relatively secure when it's wet. If your bottoms suddenly sag, your top shifts dramatically, or you're immediately adjusting everything when you get out of the water, something isn't fitting correctly.
This is one of those things people who spend a lot of time around the ocean learn quickly: always think about how your bikini will fit wet, not just how it looks in the mirror.
7. You Can't Stop Adjusting It
This might be the most practical sign of all.
A great bikini should let you enjoy your day.
You should be able to swim, walk down the beach, lay in the sun, grab lunch, jump off the boat, or chase your friends into the water without thinking about your swimsuit every five seconds.
If you're constantly pulling, tying, repositioning, or checking your bikini, it might be time to try another size or silhouette.
The Perfect Bikini Fit Should Feel Effortless
After enough summers spent by the ocean, you learn that there isn't one universal definition of a "flattering" bikini.
Some of us want barely-there coverage. Some want support. Some want both. And sometimes the bikini you feel incredible in breaks every traditional "fit rule" in the book.
If you feel confident in it, wear it.
At High Tower Swimwear, our tops and bottoms are sold separately because bodies aren't standardized—and your bikini shouldn't expect them to be. Different styles offer different levels of coverage, support, and rise, making it easier to mix sizes and silhouettes until you find the combination that feels like you.
Designed in Santa Cruz, California and handmade in small batches in Bali, our swimwear is made for everyday life by the water.
